Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)

We’re building a workplace where our team members’ diverse perspectives help solve some of the most complex challenges in healthcare.

Celebrating diversity, realizing equity and fostering inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion are embedded in both our workplace and mission. For us to lead in creating a more equitable society, the work starts inside our walls, where we put people first and prioritize the humanity of everyone we care for.

We know diverse and inclusive teams are more innovative, creative and successful, and we aspire to be an organization reflective of the broader society that treats people fairly and empowers them to show up as their authentic selves every day.

By embracing DEI, we are truly unlocking the culture of innovation and performance that allows us to better help the people we're privileged to serve.

Our DEI vision

Our vision is to create an innovative atmosphere where every team member is empowered, where our cultural diversity fuels our performance and where we leverage our collective power to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone.

Our integrated approach to DEI

  • Part of who we are: Ingrained into our values, DEI is woven through our business processes, policies, learning and development, and performance.
  • By everyone, for everyone: We think comprehensively about DEI, taking into account all the people we touch and inviting action from all corners of our organization.
  • Responsive to an ever-changing world: By anticipating and understanding markets, employees and the people we serve, we are equipped to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Recruiting practices and integrated programs

SOAR (Strength, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results), our return-ship program, supports gender diversity. Our veterans’ program is focused on talent from the armed forces.

Growing and developing our diverse talent

Taking a data-driven approach to setting priorities and measuring progress, we leverage insights to improve hiring, development, engagement and retention of our diverse talent. Our employee surveys help us better measure and understand employee sentiment related to fairness, affirmation, safety, identity and connection. We promote:

Equal and fair access

We provide opportunities, resources and a safe work environment for people from the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities.

DEI forums and speaker sessions

Forums and speakers address gender equality, overcoming resistance, the impact of bias on women's journeys to leadership and other topics.

Career advancement

We support the United Women Leading in Technology (UWLiT) forum for gender diversity, UHG Women Invent to enhance patent diversity, and more.

Learning opportunities

Our team members interact with diverse talent, including training on unconscious bias, mindfulness in the workplace and other critical topics.

Favorable policy changes

We offer health coverage for same-gender partners and cover adoption, surrogacy and fertility treatments like IVF. We have gender-agnostic paid parental leave of 26 weeks.

Some medical complications, along with a new project and recent promotion, was a lot to juggle at the beginning of my pregnancy. Thankfully, my manager and leader, both fathers, were extremely supportive during this time. I was recommended to join the CareNine program provided by Optum India, and I can’t tell you what a blessing it was! When I was ready to go back to work, my manager and I worked together to explore flexible working options that made returning to work seamless.
