Optum India and Samarthanam empower persons with disabilities

Optum India reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and community impact by partnering with Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

Together, the organizations distributed 150 assistive devices and 50 motorized tricycles, enabling greater mobility, independence and access to livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities across Bengaluru.

The event included distinguished guests Dr. HN Gopala Krishna, IAS Commissioner of Labour; Mr. Das Suryavanshi, State Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Mr. Nagaraj, MLC and Chairman of the Privileges Committee, Karnataka Legislative Council; Ms. Uma Ratnam Krishnan, Managing Director, Optum India; and Dr. Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar, Founder and Managing Trustee, Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled. Also in attendance were senior leaders from both organizations.

This initiative builds on a longstanding partnership that combines Samarthanam’s on-ground expertise with Optum India's commitment to be a force for good — in India, for India. The collaboration focuses on advancing assistive technology awareness, improving learning environments in government-aided schools through smart boards and RO water units, and creating pathways for equitable access and inclusion.

“At Optum India, inclusion is a shared responsibility to uplift communities where we live and work,” said Ms. Uma Ratnam Krishnan, Managing Director, Optum India. “Guided by our vision to be a force for good, we’re proud to collaborate with Samarthanam to empower persons with disabilities. Through this partnership, we’re not only expanding mobility but also creating awareness around assistive technologies and enhancing classrooms with digital tools for better learning.”

Dr. Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar, Founder and Managing Trustee of Samarthanam, added, “Our purpose in life is fulfilled when we help someone reclaim theirs. Every motorized tricycle and assistive device handed over today represents dignity restored, dreams reignited and mobility that opens the world.”

This initiative reflects the Optum India culture of “Caring, Connecting, Growing Together,” and its unwavering commitment to corporate social responsibility. By enabling mobility and inclusion, Optum India continues to create real impact and strengthen its bond with communities.
